Police vans stand guard outside the Sagerska Palace, the official residence of the Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, after a man died inside either by committing suicide or in an accident on Friday.

STOCKHOLM -- A man has died inside Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's residence in Stockholm after either committing suicide or an accident, but the prime minister and his family were safe, police said Friday.
"There are no signs of a crime. We investigate this as a suicide or a work-related accident," Towe Hagg, a police spokeswoman, told Reuters.
Media said the man died of gunshot wounds.
The dead man was not part of the prime minister's personal bodyguards but had full clearance to be in the building. Another official said he was a security guard who worked at the residence.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said Thursday that nearly 3.4 million visitors came to Las Vegas in September. That's 1.8 percent up from the same month last year.
The number of rooms remained virtually flat, while citywide occupancy rates went up slightly to about 87 percent.
Average hotel rates were up one percent to $113 a night.
Clark County gambling revenues of $761 million were up year-over-year, with a 1.2 percent gain on the Las Vegas Strip and a 24 percent jump on the Boulder Strip.
Southern Nevada tourism is up 1.8 percent so far this year.?

Pediatric clinical trials not going overseas - study
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Despite some concerns that medical studies involving children could make an ethically dubious shift to developing nations, a new study suggests that's not happening.
It's really only in the last decade that clinical trials - even in the U.S. and Europe - have started to focus on children, said Dr. Dianne Murphy, director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Pediatric Therapeutics.
Since children cannot give informed consent to enter a study (their parents have to do it), kids have historically been left out of clinical trials testing vaccines, drugs and other therapies.
But that's a problem, Murphy explained, because children are not small adults, and study results from adults cannot simply be extended to them.
"We don't know if we're giving them the right dose, or if it's even going to be effective," Murphy explained.
So pediatric clinical trials are necessary. But since most children are, fortunately, healthy, researchers have to cast a wider net for study participants.
"You do have to reach out to more countries and more locations," Murphy said.
And that has led some to question whether there could be an inappropriate shift to countries where ethical guidelines - like making sure parents give truly informed consent - might not be closely monitored.
In the new study, however, Murphy and her colleagues found that the number of pediatric clinical trials in developing countries has actually declined in recent years. And the U.S. remains, by far, the most common trial location.
Of 346 pediatric trials the FDA reviewed, the U.S. participated in 86 percent, providing three-quarters of the patients. Less developed and transitional countries, like Mexico, Brazil and India, took part in 22 percent and accounted for 10 percent of all kids involved.
The figures come from trials submitted to the FDA in support of therapies approved between 2007 and 2010.
Developing nations, the agency found, played a smaller role in those trials than they had just a few years earlier.
In an earlier study of trials submitted between 2002 and 2007, the FDA found that developing countries took part in 38 percent of trials, and accounted for almost one-quarter of patients.
Those numbers will naturally shift depending on the diseases and treatments being studied in a given time period, Murphy noted.
If there are more trials testing vaccines or treatments for infectious disease, developing nations will tend to be more involved. And that's appropriate, Murphy said, because those diseases are a far bigger problem in developing countries.
"Children shouldn't be in a trial unless there's an opportunity for them to benefit," Murphy said.
The researchers didn't find evidence that kids in developing countries were being recruited into trials for diseases that are irrelevant to them. Of children enrolled in Mexico, for example, 97 percent were involved in vaccine trials.
In addition, most trials being done in developing countries (75 percent) were also running in wealthy ones.
Murphy said the FDA is taking steps to ensure that pediatric trials are being done appropriately. "For one," she noted, "everyone should be aware that we're reviewing this. That alone is important."
But she said the agency also offers training to regulators in other countries, and has regular conference calls with officials in developing nations to help them with "in-the-weeds kinds of questions."
"These conversations, particularly for (trials with) children, are very important," Murphy said.
Continuing to do trials involving kids is also vital, according to Murphy.
"If we don't, then your child becomes an experiment of one," she said, noting that research suggests that products that work for adults' ills do not work for children about one-fifth of the time.

Danish researchers found that people were 39 percent more likely to have heart disease, and 57 percent more likely to have a heart attack, if they had at least three of these four signs: baldness on top of the head, receded hairline, a crease in the earlobe, and fatty deposits on the eyelids known as xanthelasmata.?
The researchers accounted for people's ages in their results.

Therefore, the study shows "looking old for your age, by [having] these aging signs, marks poor cardiovascular health," said study researcher Dr. Anne Tybjaerg-Hansen, a professor and chief physician in the department of clinical biochemistry at Copenhagen University Hospital.

While the exact reason for the links between these signs and heart disease risk remains unclear, the study "validates the common clinical practice that the clinician examines the patient, and often looks at whether a person looks older or younger for her age," Tybjaerg-Hansen said.?
The researchers used data from the Copenhagen Heart Study, which included10,885 people who were over the age of 40. Over the 35-year study, 3,401 participants developed heart disease, and 1,708 had a heart attack. Researchers examined six physical features associated with aging, but found that two ? gray hair and wrinkles ? did not appear to be linked with increased risk of heart problems.?
The study included 5,828 men and 5,057 women. When the researchers considered the genders separately, they found that hair loss in women was not linked with an increased risk of heart disease. However, among the 737 men who had a receding hairline, 82 suffered a heart attack, meaning there a 40 percent higher risk in men with hair loss than those without.

Previous research has looked at whether hair loss may be a warning sign of heart disease, but results have been conflicting. Some studies have linked the severity and type of baldness with the risks of heart disease or heart attacks to varying degrees, but others have found no connection. Because the risk of both heart disease and baldness rise with age, it can be difficult for researchers to separate the two in studies.

Tybjaerg-Hansen said the four signs identified in the new study should give clinicians greater incentive to treat patients who have them. "The suggestion is that lifestyle changes and lipid-lowering therapies should be intensified, because their risk is higher," she said.

However, the area needs more research, because "it would be nice to know why these [varying factors] would be associated with increased risk," she said.

Tybjaerg-Hansen said, for example, that hair loss is linked with levels of?testosterone in the blood, so the new study suggests the hormone also plays a role in heart disease, but there's "no hard data there at all, [it's] only speculative."?
She said the group for whom the new results would raise the greatest concern is men between ages 70 and 79. In this group, 45 percent of those with all four aging signs developed heart disease, versus 31 percent of those with none of the four.

"This study underscores the importance of doing a good physical exam, in addition to any testing we're going to do for risk for heart disease," said Dr. Nieca Goldberg, director of the NYU Center for Women's Health and American Heart Association spokesperson, in a statement in response to the study.?
While the researchers adjusted their results to account for other risk factors for heart disease, Goldberg noted that, for example, xanthelasmata is a sign of high cholesterol levels, a traditional risk factor for heart disease.

Goldberg concluded that while the length of the study made the results compelling, doctors "need to continue to monitor our standard testing for heart disease risk, such as measuring cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose for diabetes."

The researchers are presenting their findings today (Nov. 6) at an American Heart Association research conference. The findings have not been published in a scientific journal.

Iraq war contractor ordered to pay $85 million
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? A jury on Friday ordered an American military contractor to pay $85 million after finding it guilty of negligence for illnesses suffered by a dozen Oregon soldiers who guarded an oilfield water plant during the Iraq war.
After a three-week trial, the jury deliberated for just two days before reaching a decision against the contractor, Kellogg Brown and Root. The company was ordered to pay $6.25 million to each of the soldiers in punitive damages and $850,000 in noneconomic damages.
The suit was the first concerning soldiers' exposure to a toxin at a water plant in southern Iraq. The soldiers said they suffer from respiratory ailments after their exposure to sodium dichromate, and they fear that a carcinogen the toxin contains, hexavalent chromium, could cause cancer later in life.
Another suit from Oregon Guardsmen is on hold while the Portland trial plays out. There are also suits pending in Indiana and West Virginia.
KBR witnesses testified that the soldiers' maladies were a result of the desert air and pre-existing conditions. Even if they were exposed to sodium dichromate, KBR witnesses argued, the soldiers weren't around enough of it, for long enough, to cause serious health problems.
The contractor's defense ultimately rested on the fact that they informed the U.S. Army of the risks of exposure to sodium dichromate.
KBR was tasked with reconstructing the decrepit, scavenged plant just after the March 2003 invasion while National Guardsmen defended the area. Bags of unguarded sodium dichromate ? a corrosive substance used to keep pipes at the water plant free of rust ? were ripped open, allowing the substance to spread across the plant an into the air.
Attorneys for the 12 Oregon National Guardsmen focused on the months of April, May and June 2003, alleging KBR knew about the presence of sodium dichromate and took no action.
One of the soldiers' key witnesses, a doctor, testified that hexavalent chromium caused a change to soldiers' genes, leaving them more susceptible to cancer. KBR's attorneys challenged that diagnosis, saying the soldiers' witness was the only physician in the U.S. prepared to make such a diagnosis.
During the Iraq war, KBR was the engineering and construction arm of Halliburton, the biggest U.S. contractor during the conflict. KBR split from Halliburton in April 2007.
KBR has faced lawsuits before related to its work in Iraq. One of the more prominent cases, involving a soldier who was electrocuted in his barracks shower at an Army base, was dismissed.
A second case is still in Maryland federal court, in which former KBR employees and others who worked on Army bases in Iraq and Afghanistan allege KBR allowed them to be exposed to toxic smoke from garbage disposal "burn pits."
