Broadcom, Micromax Partner For 3G Android Smartphones

The leading fabless semiconductor company, Broadcom Corp. (Nasdaq: BRCM) has partnered with Micromax Informatics Ltd. to launch a new range of quadcore-based 3G smartphones in India.

The news was confirmed by Vikas Jain, Business Director, Micromax who also adds that the device range will have all the latest features. "We will be launching the device by March this year and the range will start from well below INR 5,000," adds Jain.

Broadcom also confirmed the development without naming the handset player it is collaborating with. "We are in talks with a domestic handset vendor to launch budget smartphones in India in the first quarter of this year," says a Broadcom spokesperson.

The chipset-vendor is highly optimistic about the Indian market and believes that 3G and 4G technology roll-outs will help the country become one of the largest mobile broadband markets in the next few years.

Broadcom's key focus areas for the Indian market in the coming two years are set-top boxes, network solutions for telecom operators and devices as they evolve from 3G to 4G.

According to IDC , the research firm, smartphone demand is growing in country's like India and China. While China is expected to become the biggest market for smartphones by 2012, leaving the US behind, India is also expected to be amongst the top five by 2016. But, India is a price-conscious economy where majority of users look for quality products at competitive prices. Hence, the key challenge for vendors is introducing quality devices at a low price.

This is the first time that Broadcom has partnered with any Indian handset manufacturer for a quadcore-based phone. While many global handset players like Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK), LG Telecom and High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) (Taiwan: 2498) have launched their high-priced quadcore-processor based phones, domestic handset players have largely been absent from the list.
