US filings for unemployment aid at a 5-week high

(AP) ? The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose last week to a five-week high, evidence that the job market remains sluggish.

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications for unemployment aid rose 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 383,000. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, increased for the first time in a month to 374,500.

Economists were disappointed by the data, particularly when coupled with a separate report Thursday that showed only modest hiring by private businesses in May. On Friday, the government will report on May hiring by private and public employers.

"The jobs data were not reassuring ahead of tomorrow's ... report," said Jennifer Lee, an economist at BMO Capital Markets.

Applications had declined to roughly 370,000 for four weeks. That drop suggested that hiring could pick up in May. When applications drop below 375,000, it typically suggests that hiring is strong enough to reduce the unemployment rate.

Thursday's data doesn't figure into the May employment report, to be released Friday. That report is based on figures gathered in the middle of the month. Analysts expect it will show that employers added 158,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate remained 8.1 percent.

That would be an improvement from April, when employers added only 115,000 jobs. But it would be slower than the blistering pace set this winter, when the economy generated an average of 252,000 jobs a month from December-February.

The number of people receiving benefits fell, partly because extended benefits programs are ending in many states. About 6.1 million people received benefits in the week that ended May 12. That's down 30,750 from the previous week.

Separately, a private survey showed that businesses boosted hiring only slightly in May. Payroll provider ADP says businesses added 133,000 jobs. That's slightly better than the revised total of 113,000 jobs it reported for April, which was the weakest in seven months. The report covers only hiring in the private sector; it excludes government jobs.

The unemployment rate has fallen from 9.1 percent in August to 8.1 percent last month. Part of the reason for the drop is that employers added 1.5 million jobs during that time. But it has also declined because some people gave up looking for work. The government counts people as unemployed only if they're actively looking for a job.

Economists have cautioned that a warm winter led companies to move up some hiring and accelerate other activity that normally wouldn't occur until spring. That gave the appearance that the economy had strengthened in January and February and weakened in early spring.

Recent economic indicators, meanwhile, have been mixed.

Consumer confidence fell sharply in May to its lowest level since January, the Conference Board said Tuesday. Americans were more worried about jobs, housing and the stock market. Lower confidence could lead consumers to cut back on their spending.

But that survey contrasted with a report, released Friday, by Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan that found consumer sentiment rose to its highest level in four and a half years.

Economists said the difference between the two is partly explained by timing. The Conference Board's survey was completed by May 16, just before stock prices leveled off after falling steadily. Gas prices also fell further after the survey was completed. The University of Michigan's report continued until later in the month and would have captured both of those trends.

There are signs the housing market is slowly improving. Home prices rose in March from the previous month in most major U.S. cities for the first time in seven months, according to the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index. Prices rose in 12 of the 20 cities it tracks. Some of the increase was due to the start of the spring home selling season. The month-to-month price changes aren't seasonally adjusted.

In April, sales of both previously occupied homes and new homes rose near two-year highs. Builders are gaining more confidence in the market as traffic from potential buyers rises, according to an industry survey.

Building permits have risen in recent months, though they fell in April from nearly a two-year high, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday.

Long-term mortgage rates have never been lower. The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.78 percent last week, the lowest since long-term rates began in the 1950s.

Still, the pace of home sales remains well below healthy levels. Economists say it could be years before the market is fully healed.

Online Business Advertising For Dummies | The Best Internet Money ...

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012 at 10:10 am ?

Online business advertising is generally a simple process, but you would be surprised how often it is messed up. It?s the little things that you need to look out for to make sure you actually get clicks on your advertisements and aren?t paying for a waste of time. Let?s go over some of the basics.

Make sure the website you?re advertising on has some sort of connection to what you?re selling. For instance, you don?t want to try to advertise for Silly Putty or any other kids items on ESPN.com. You would be better off advertising on a toy website. The three L?s of real estate apply to online advertising as well: location, location, location.

Be aware of what kind of people are looking for your product before you design your advertisement. If you are marketing a law firm, you are going to want to clearly state what your firm defends and be very business-like, not an in-your-face advertisement like they make for upcoming movies. Speaking of those crazy advertisements that expand to block the entire website, do not ever do that. I have never spoken to anyone who enjoys those types of advertisements, and they probably cost more to make on top of it. There are better ways to get attention while remaining creative!

When your customer clicks on your link, you want them to be aware of what they?re going to find when they click. You don?t want a picture containing a person wearing athletic shoes and socks when you only are selling the socks. A customer might click because they liked the shoes and then get frustrated to find out you aren?t selling them. There?s a slim chance that someone clicked purely for the socks, but it?s still not a good marketing model if you?re trying to turn clicks into purchases.

These facts are very helpful to anyone trying to do their own online business advertising, but the end-all be-all is to hire a company to assist you. For more information on an example of one of these companies, click here. Online marketing companies can show you the ropes and help by taking the reigns on advertising in the abyss that is the Internet.

What I hope you get out of this article is the importance of knowledge before action. People will ignore your advertisements if they are not well placed, appealing, and informative. If you are struggling on your own, the be-all end-all to ensure success is to hire an online marketing firm, and never be afraid to ask for help!

Do you want to add some sophistication to your home but are low on funds? A door bell replacement can add a bit of style and grace to a home. This is an improvement anyone who comes to your home will notice.

Use the 60/30/10 rule when decorating a room. This simply means that 60% of the room should be the primary color with 30% of the room being your secondary color and the remaining 10% should be your accent color. In practice, utilize the primary color for the walls, and the upholstery should feature the secondary color with the last 10 percent being used as an accent.

For safety, install peepholes in any exterior doors. You should know who is at your door before you open it! Installing a peephole is affordable and can be done quickly. You just need a drill and an hour or so out of your day. It is well worth it, especially because a peephole can give you a greater peace of mind.

The windows in your home are important when dealing with home improvement. Spend the money to replace them! Double-glazed windows are a must. How To Improve Home Electrical Safety - Home-Improvement ...

Posted on May 28, 2012

Right before wondering on the subject of any small remodels first use the expertise of providers for instance: artisan-renovation-service, to be sure your effort will not get wasted after simply by a poor pipe joints! Everyone has a different situation, and what improvements are necessary for your home will depend on yours. Your house might have features, like a fireplace, which other homes don?t have. If you don?t have a fireplace, then you don?t have to be concerned about what to do with it, like your neighbor who does have one. However, there are so many things that can be found in every home which is a good thing. The reason for that is you can learn from the experiences of so many other people. The internet is a great place to learn information that was discovered by somebody that you will never meet face-to-face. When people give advice, whether it is asked for or not, knowledge is imparted that could be valuable.

The primary concern that you should have, especially if you have gutters, is to make sure that the water flow freely. If you live in an area where there are a lot of these during the autumn season, you know what we are talking about. Never allow the leaves to accumulate in the gutter so that this problem never arises. As long as the water can flow, everything is okay. Water leakage, due to blocked gutters, is a common issue that many people have. If this water flow continues, your basement may become flooded with water.

Some old houses still have electrical panels that consist of the old Buss fuses. Buss fuses are not installed in modern homes. You will find circuit breakers instead of fuses. It is okay if you have fuses in your old home. If that is in your budget, it is probably a good idea to change from fuses to modern circuit breaker panels for your home. If it is in the budget, hire an electrician that can change out your old fuses and put in a new circuit breaker system. Your CB panel should be installed properly, as long as it matches the current rating that your home is supposed to have.

Energy costs have risen a lot over the years, and everyone knows it. When you know that things like energy prices are only going up in cost, then at least you can do things to prepare for it. You need to be as energy-efficient as possible, in the energy usage you now have. Adequate ventilation in the back of your refrigerator for the coils that are there, will help it be more efficient. All you need to do is keep the air from being blocked, and flowing freely to the back of your refrigerator. Dust can get built up on the coils, and you can?t let that happen.

Home improvement ideas run from good to bad, and everywhere in between. You need to do your own reading and research, to decide which improvements you want to do. You might not know much about tools, but less intensive jobs are not that difficult to do. It is not necessary to have totally in-depth knowledge of all areas, either. Some jobs need to be done by those who are professionals, because then the job will get done right, and more safely.

Beetle flight: Flapping protective wings increase lift

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? The forewings of beetles, the elytra, are hardened structures which protect the insect's flying wings and body. The function of the forewings in flight has been questioned, which is what prompted researchers at Lund University's Department of Biology to study how the forewings and the underlying flying wings work in dung beetles. The researchers studied the air flow created by the wings when the beetles fly in a wind tunnel. The wind tunnel in Lund is one of a few of its kind in the world.

"The results show that the forewings, which are held out and flap during flight, generate lift, helping the beetles to stay airborne," says Christoffer Johansson Westheim, researcher at Lund University.

The study also shows, however, that the beetles are less effective at generating lift than other animals, as a result of their forewings negatively affecting their flying wings. Thus the protection afforded by the hardened forewings comes at a cost in the form of lower efficiency in flight. One conclusion to be drawn from this is that if the flying wings alone could provide enough power to keep the insect in flight, the forewings would fold back over the body while the beetle is flying, which is precisely what happens in some species. The study is the first of its kind on beetles, but the researchers consider that the results could apply generally to beetles whose flying wings flap behind forewings -- despite the fact that the dung beetles are a fairly extreme case, with a body weight of 5-7 grams and a wingspan of around 15 centimetres.

The beetles used in the current study were captured in South Africa, where they normally fly at night over open terrain, on the hunt for dung. Their flight speed is high and the dung beetles are hardly known for their manoeuvrability. They often miss the dung they are looking for and land some way away from it, but they prefer to walk the last distance rather than attempt a more accurate landing. The research study is part of a project aiming to understand the adaptations of various animals to flight, and how the animals' different origins affect their capacity to fly.

The researchers taking part in the current study are Christoffer Johansson Westheim, Sophia Engel, Emily Baird, Marie Dacke, Florian T. Muijres and Anders Hedenstr?m, all of whom work at the Department of Biology at Lund University.

2-minute expert: How to avoid blurry photos

13 hrs.

This holiday weekend, you may be traveling to see family, taking a scenic day trip or going to the neighbor's BBQ.

All are good photo opportunities ? whether with a "real" camera or a cellphone.?

Here are some tips to make the pictures better. Nothing too tricky: They assume you use the camera's auto setting or make minor adjustments.?[6 Tips to Use Instagram Like a Pro]

How do I make sure photos are in focus?

Often, something is in focus, but not the thing you wanted. Many modern point-and-shoot cameras and some cellphones have a face-detection mode that you can select to recognize multiple faces and optimize the focus (as well as exposure and color) for them.

If you don't have this mode, or you want to focus on something else, adjust the focus point to be more precise.?

Newer iPhones make this easy: Simply point on the screen to the part you want to be sharp.?

On other cameras, you can often change the default ? which makes a compromise so that everything is sort of sharp ? and instead chose a smaller focus point or area.?

To do this, you may have to take the camera out of auto mode and chose program mode, typically labeled "P" on the selector. [Expect to See Photo-Sharing in Ever-More Apps]

They still look blurry. What gives?

You may still get a blurry picture if you are in low light because the camera has to keep the shutter open for a relatively long time.?

The trick here is to minimize movement. If you are buying a new point-and-shoot, get one with optical image stabilizations (OIS), which moves either the lens or the image sensor to compensate for jitters.

With or without OIS, try holding the camera steadier. Make sure you have firm footing, and keep your arms close to your body when you shoot. If you can, hold the camera against something such as a pole or a tabletop. [What Makes a High-Quality Camera?]

HEAT + HUMIDITY + HEAT INDEX + OZONE SYNERGISM + ...

Today, May 26, 2012 the National Weather Service issued an Orange Air Alert combined with Heat Index of mid 90?s for most of Kentucky and other surrounding states. Therefore, I felt compelled to re-post this important message now that the hot season has begun.

We ?old timers? were acclimated to hot weather 50 years ago. When kids, we played outside all day, because we had nothing else but sports activities to occupy our time.

We had no computers, video games or central air conditioning. Air pollution was non-existent.

Today, in contrast, football, Baseball and all Sports Recreation and Exercise (SRE) are much different sports, because conditions have changed and many of those adults in charge and Coaches ignore or overlook weather alerts.

Now there are drastically different non-acclimated athletes, drastically different weather conditions that include global warming and air pollution / increased ground level Ozone.

Ozone and other emerging weather conditions are Pre-Disposing Risk Factors for Heal Illness and Heat Stroke. Ozone combined with an elevated heat index might also cause irreversible lung damage.

In addition, youth athletes participations are increasing dramatically while SRE communiies turn a blind eye to youth sports safety.

Youth SRE athletes are not acclimated to hot weather nowadays. They only go outside to practice and play when seasons begin. The news is that they potentially practice and play outside in dangerous heat, humidity and heat index also combined with air pollution. Often the detrimental air pollutant is Ozone.

OZONE TOXICITY is a well known toxic condition affecting both human and plant life. ?New statistics from the World Health Organization show that in the United States, air pollution annually kills nearly twice as many people as do traffic accidents and that deaths from air pollution equal deaths from breast cancer and prostate cancer combined,? said Tiffany Schauer, executive director of Our Children?s Earth Foundation. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Smog has been systematically researched and confirmed athlete hazards.

Ozone (O3) is a tri-atomic molecule. It has three oxygen atoms. Ozone on ground level is an air pollutant with harmful effects on human lungs and the entire respiratory system. On the other hand, the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere is beneficial, acting as a filter and preventing potentially damaging ultraviolet light from reaching the Earth?s surface.

Ground level Ozone peaks in the afternoon after sunlight cooks air-born nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and sulphur dioxide, after air pollution has been emitted during the day.

Ozone is a more powerful oxidizing agent than O2. The Ozone oxidation of human tissue cells in the lungs and entire respiratory system, when bad air is inhaled by athletes, proceeds rapidly with increasing dangerously hot weather. Ozone and heat act synergistically causing a greater effect on body tissues when combined together in the inhalation gas mixture that aerates the lungs. The two appear to have a linear relationship.

Ozone can irritate the respiratory system causing coughing and tightness in the chest. SRE athletes retch and have difficulty breathing. Breaths might be more rapid and shallow, hallmark signs. Symptoms may last hours after exposure.

Pre-existing Asthma is aggravated by Ozone. Asthmatics are more greatly affected by the irritant and high levels result in a greater number of asthma attacks and hospitalizations. Ozone also makes asthmatics more sensitive to allergens that cause asthma attacks and can aggravate chronic lung diseases like bronchitis and infections.

The inflammation and damage to the epithelial cells lining the entire respiratory system and lungs can be silent and rapid for certain groups of football athletes. Often there is no warning.

Ozone damage can occur without any noticeable signs. Football athletes initially might not manifest symptoms, but as Ozone continues to cause lung damage, the athlete might become symptomatic and suddenly collapse.

Pulmonary damage can be irreversible in some football athletes. ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) is the most serious result. ARDS results in a fibroproliferative reaction that lines and blocks off . permanently, the permeable wall of the alveolar sacs. Oxygen cannot be exchanged with circulating pulmonary blood. Sudden catastrophic collapse ensues after oxygen deprivation. Death is almost certain after ARDS begins. Even steroids are ineffective.

Scientists are researching ozone?s long-term effects. SRE athletes repeatedly exposed to high levels of ozone may sustain lung damage, absent an acute attack. Studies suggest that ozone may also harm resistance to respiratory infections and later in life cause lung cancer.

Every coach, must daily check the Air Quality Index and Heat Index on their field of play or practice. Coaches have a duty to protect children who are participating in SRE activities. They are transferred the chain of protective custody for our children.

An AQI of 0-50 usually has no abnormal health effects. When there is an AQI of 51-100, SRE athletes with respiratory disease and asthma should not practice or play outside. During an AQI 101-150 in addition to asthmatics, an athlete in the sensitive group, should not practice football outside.

The problem with this category is that members of the sensitive group might only become known following catastrophic collapse. During dangerous heat, no one should practiceor play SRE outdoors with AQI greater than 100.

Youth athletes should move indoors to practice and play in any of the following categories: AQI of 151 ? 200 is Unhealthy?. AQI of 201 ? 300 is ?Very Unhealthy. AQI greater than 300 is? Hazardous?.

Green 0-50 good
Yellow 51-100 moderate
Orange 101-150 unhealthy for sensitive groups
Red 151-200 Unhealthy
Purple 201-300 very unhealthy
Brown 301-500 Hazardous

Another serious condition has been discovered but not reported. When activity diesel school buses arrive near the end of football practice, if parked idling near practice fields, while football athletes are running gassers or wind sprints finishing practice, they can create ?hot spots? of Ozone in already hazardous heat and Ozone environment and push athletes? Ozone Toxicity over the edge. Beware.

Exercise to exhaustion in dangerous heat and ozone is a recipe for youth SRE athlete death. Body organs bake and oxidize. Children die. Often Ozone Toxicity is accompanied by Exertional Heat Stroke.

Youth Athlete Fatality is the catastrophic outcome, when the core body temperature elevates to 107* after exposure to an increased Heat Index and Ozone synergism.

The only hope for survival once the core body temperature is 107* is to place the Youth Athlete in a kiddy pool with ice water as soon as the athlete is unclothed down to shorts.

Are members of the public divided about climate change because they don't understand the science behind it? If Americans knew more basic science and were more proficient in technical reasoning, would public consensus match scientific consensus?

A study published today online in the journal Nature Climate Change suggests that the answer to both questions is no. Indeed, as members of the public become more science literate and numerate, the study found, individuals belonging to opposing cultural groups become even more divided on the risks that climate change poses.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, the study was conducted by researchers associated with the Cultural Cognition Project at Yale Law School and involved a nationally representative sample of 1500 U.S. adults.

"The aim of the study was to test two hypotheses," said Dan Kahan, Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Law and Professor of Psychology at Yale Law School and a member of the study team. "The first attributes political controversy over climate change to the public's limited ability to comprehend science, and the second, to opposing sets of cultural values. The findings supported the second hypothesis and not the first," he said.

"Cultural cognition" is the term used to describe the process by which individuals' group values shape their perceptions of societal risks. It refers to the unconscious tendency of people to fit evidence of risk to positions that predominate in groups to which they belong. The results of the study were consistent with previous studies that show that individuals with more egalitarian values disagree sharply with individuals who have more individualistic ones on the risks associated with nuclear power, gun possession, and the HPV vaccine for school girls.

In this study, researchers measured "science literacy" with test items developed by the National Science Foundation. They also measured their subjects' "numeracy"that is, their ability and disposition to understand quantitative information.

"In effect," Kahan said, "ordinary members of the public credit or dismiss scientific information on disputed issues based on whether the information strengthens or weakens their ties to others who share their values. At least among ordinary members of the public, individuals with higher science comprehension are even better at fitting the evidence to their group commitments."

Kahan said that the study supports no inferences about the reasoning of scientific experts in climate change.

Researcher Ellen Peters of Ohio State University said that people who are higher in numeracy and science literacy usually make better decisions in complex technical situations, but the study clearly casts doubt on the notion that the more you understand science and math, the better decisions you'll make in complex and technical situations. "What this study shows is that people with high science and math comprehension can think their way to conclusions that are better for them as individuals but are not necessarily better for society."

According to Kahan, the study suggests the need for science communication strategies that reflect a more sophisticated understanding of cultural values.

"More information can help solve the climate change conflict," Kahan said, "but that information has to do more than communicate the scientific evidence. It also has to create a climate of deliberations in which no group perceives that accepting any piece of evidence is akin to betrayal of their cultural group."

In addition to Dan Kahan and Ellen Peters, other study researchers were Maggie Wittlin of the Cultural Cognition Project, Paul Slovic of Decision Research, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette of the Cultural Cognition Project, Donald Braman of George Washington University, and Gregory Mandel of Temple University.

African Entrepreneurs Can Take Advantage Of Outsourcing Growth ...

By Jennifer Ehidiamen

?

VENTURES AFRICA ? Kagem Tibaijuka founded?Kagem Tibaijuka & Co,? a small-scale B2B marketing company based in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. But, all of her clients are based outside Tanzania.?While India is part of the outsourcing boom, companies like Kagem Tibaijuka & Co, customize marketing campaigns for international small businesses in markets such as London and Prague. They are a part of the sudden outsourcing growth on the continent.

?

According to Kagem, ?outsourcing is traditionally seen as something in the IT sector to cut costs but in marketing, outsourcing from a business to business angle can be an excellent way for small businesses to focus on what they do best and allow us to do the heavy lifting for them to ensure that they meet their business goals.?

?

Kangem Tibaijuka & Co has worked with companies like Peachy Loans, Designer-Clothes.co.uk and Signature Car Hire.

?

?Kagem was contracted to create fashion guides to go on my e-commerce website. I would say it was high quality writing that Kagem provided, it ticked all the boxes in terms of the way I wanted it written. I would work withKagem again on new projects? Matt Seigneur at Designer -clothes, writes in a testimonial.

?

?We always put their priorities first which is why clients work with us to create campaigns that will resonate with their buying audience,? states Kagem.

?

How can more entrepreneurs venture into the business of outsourcing? What business opportunities are there for African countries?
In this interview, Kagem shares her experience and sheds more light on the business of outsourcing and how African businesses can take advantage of the surge. Enjoy!

?

?

How will you describe B2B marketing in a layman?s language?

B2B marketing is best described as assisting the director of a blockbuster film, while B2C work is like doing the make-up of the movie star in the film. While companies like Mars, Inc sell to consumers with bright graphics and complex marketing campaigns, we sell to businesses who are passionate about they do and simply want to grow.

?

That is an interesting analogy! So tell us, what does your company do currently??

At the moment we are working with several clients internationally by helping them with content marketing, which is using content to help promote and market their products and services. Content marketing is one of the most exciting areas of marketing because the ability to tell vivid stories gives businesses a human side that clients and customers want to see. Content marketing creates engagement which is needed to make sales.

?

Drawing from your experience, how do you think more African companies can take advantage of outsourcing?

The Internet is like an unopened Christmas gift that African companies can use in order to find outsourcing clients. African companies whether they are based in Nairobi, Johannesburg or Dar-es-Salaam can use tools such as email marketing and low cost telephone calls to promote themselves to international clients who need key services outsourced with a focus on value for money and a high standard of work.

?

So far you have worked with different international companies. How do you get these clients? Explain the whole process from first contact to full achievement of set goals.

What I do is I first read as much as I can about specific industry sectors such as financial services and I learn what the key trends are. I look at industries which are destined for growth and then I use search engines to find relevant businesses to contact. I use cold call approaches most of the time ? all of my clients were converted through cold call approaches where they were not expecting me to get in touch. I normally email or call the business involved and I ask to speak to the right person. I ask if I can submit my ideas on how we can help them achieve their goals. Through achieving their goals by putting their priorities first, we achieve our goals of finding new clients every month.

?

And generating revenue for the business?
Kagem?Tibaijuka & Co is a bootstrapped startup that has made over $10,000 in turnover in its first year of trading without any external funding. The company has absolutely no debt and all cash was reinvested back into?the business. We broke even in the first year due to minimal expenses and virtual working. I just recently moved into a new office to keep up with demand for new content marketing campaigns from London-based clients.

?

Who are you current competitors and what is your competitive edge in the industry?

Our competitors are definitely mid-sized marketing companies in the countries that our clients are based because they have the advantage of localisation. However, the overarching advantage we have is that we offer specialised content marketing services instead of being a jack of all trades marketing agency that does everything. We only do content marketing and that pushes us to the front for clients who want tailored content marketing services.

?

Any plans for expansion?

I would love to expand into other international markets ? the Lusophone cities of Maputo and Luanda seem interesting, and London is ideal as well as a central location to promote the company. My top tip for other companies in content marketing would be to specialise in a form of media, whether that is only delivering brochures or creating sales letters or to choose an industry that you specialise in because companies who create a unique blueprint can expand and charge more for their services.
