Not in Romney's speech: Iraq, Social Security

(AP) ? Social Security. Medicare. Iraq. Afghanistan. Illegal immigration.

They're all costly to taxpayers and the next president presumably will have to address them to one degree or another. Yet GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney made no mention of those issues Thursday in his wide-ranging acceptance speech that closed the Republican National Convention.

The address was Romney's most sweeping attempt yet to outline the case for his candidacy. It was no time to get into the nitty-gritty of federal budgeting and solutions to the nation's ills. But Romney did find ways to talk about an array of other issues, some of them sensitive for him personally and politically.

Romney did, for example, pledge to "protect the sanctity of life," a reference to abortion, even though there are clear differences on the issue between him and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. He referred to his family as Mormons, a rarity for a candidate who typically refers to his religion as "my faith." And Romney even showed emotion, which he seldom does in public, when he spoke of longing to wake up again with a pile of children in the bedroom he shares with wife Ann.

But there was much Romney did not say, areas he didn't address. And those unmentioned topics say a lot about the challenges that face the Republican ticket in the final three months of the presidential campaign.

Here are some examples and some clues about why Romney may have chosen to skip them:

?WHAT TO DO ABOUT WAR. Polls show that most Americans want to get American troops out of the costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and President Barack Obama is generally seen as a president who is doing just that. Obama began drawing down the force with a plan to have all out by the end of 2014. While Romney has occasionally criticized Obama for signaling when the drawdown in Afghanistan would happen, he also has endorsed the 2014 end to U.S. combat in Afghanistan, subject to conditions at the time. Romney has criticized Obama's withdrawal plan but offered few details about how he would change it.

?GOVERNMENT AID: On Social Security, Romney has not talked specifics about what we would do with these budget-busting entitlement programs other than to say he would gradually raise the retirement age on the massive program for aid to seniors. He generally has steered clear of proposals to touch Medicare and Social Security in the short run, which leaves a relatively limited portion of the $3.6 trillion federal budget to cut. His addition of Ryan has caused Romney a headache as Democrats seek to make him own Ryan's budget proposals that call for Social Security benefits based on workers' needs and optional private alternatives to Medicare.

?ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: It's a touchy subject for both Romney and the Republican Party. Challenged on the right during the primary season, Romney struck a tougher stance on the issue than he had in the past. He emphasized his support for a U.S.-Mexico border fence and his opposition to education benefits to illegal immigrants, sometimes in sharp tones that caused some Hispanics to turn away. That's potentially problematic because Republicans are trying to narrow the advantage Democrats have among Hispanics, the nation's fastest-growing ethnic minority group. It represents large chunks of the voters in swing states like Florida and Colorado. Some 12.2 million Hispanics are expected to vote in November.

While Romney glossed over these issues, it's a good bet Democrats won't let him do so again between now and November.

Witch Doctor Pets Solo All 4 Act Bosses On Inferno

Side note ? if you?ve been trying to email me during the past fortnight, I wouldn?t have received your mail as I forgot to change the MX records when changing hosts. This is also why forum registration emails were not being mailed out. It?s fixed now though. Sorry!

Moving on.. With the increased survivability of WD pets in patch 1.0.4, I?ve been messing around with a pet build which uses thorns/regen gear. This is something I?ve been wanting to do for a while but wasn?t really possible prior to 1.0.4. I spent a relatively small amount of gold to put together a set of gear that is around 15,000 in thorns and 1500 hp regen per second.

Before the latest patch, WD pets really couldn?t do much let alone go toe to toe with the bosses of each act, so I set about to see if the WD pets could solo each boss. Result? They can! The Butcher and Belial can be defeated without a recast while Azmodan and Diablo require some re-summoning. I do wonder if it?s possible to make an AFK Witch Doctor with a perfect set of gear. I?d love to put a set like that together but not only is the gear hard to find maxed but it?s quite expensive.

What stats do I look for on gear for a thorns build?

  • Intelligence
  • Stamina
  • All Resistance
  • Physical Damage to Attacker
  • Life Regeneration

With those 5 stats, you can put together quite a good set without breaking the bank. Adding extras into the mix like crit chance, crit damage and sockets is not only expensive but difficult to find with high stat levels. It?s something I intend to pursue as I?m interested in how such a build might work when PvP is patched into the game.

Build ? Mouse over for a preview.

Given I was not dealing any damage myself in these 4 videos, the only skills that matter for this thorns build are the passives. Fierce Loyalty allows your pets to gain 100% of your thorns gear and regen. Jungle Fortitude gives you and your pets 20% reduced damage while Zombie Handler gives us the additional Zombie Dog for a total of 4. As all 4 bosses are single targets 95% of the time, I didn?t spec the pets for any AOE abilities (they are poor unless there are enough trash mobs around as in Act 3).

Anyway, the videos!

?

There really isn?t much to say about The Butcher. He?s easy for players and pets.

?

Belial can be problematic for a lot of players and I was actually surprised that the Witch Doctor pets were able to withstand all of Belial?s damage without need for a re-summon, I had expected otherwise.

?

The hardest of the 4 to kill via the pets only method. With a bit more attention, it would be easy enough to direct the meteors away from the pets but the time to kill is vastly increased in comparison to The Butcher and Belial.

?

Easier than expected and I was only caught out a few times in Phase 2 where both pets were dead and on CD. Shadow Clones are just as brutal to pets as they are players.

There
Next up, I?ll attempt to 4 box all 4 bosses in the same manner and see just how well pets stack up in a full game.

(AP) ? Campbell Soup is tapping Andy Warhol for another 15 minutes of fame.

The world's biggest soup maker plans to introduce special-edition cans of its condensed tomato soup bearing labels reminiscent of the pop artist's paintings at Target stores starting Sunday. The 1.2 million cans will cost 75 cents each.

The Campbell Soup Co.'s embrace of Warhol's iconic imagery is a switch from its initial reaction, when the company considered taking legal action before deciding to see how the paintings were received by the public.

"There's some evidence to show there was a little bit of concern," said Jonathon Thorn, an archivist for Campbell Soup. "But they decided to take a wait-and-see approach."

By 1964, however, the company realized the paintings were becoming a phenomenon and embraced the depictions. Campbell's marketing manager even sent Warhol a letter expressing admiration for his work.

"I have since learned that you like Tomato Soup," William MacFarland wrote in the letter. "I am taking the liberty of having a couple cases of our Tomato Soup delivered to you."

Later that same year, Campbell commissioned Warhol to do a painting of a can of Campbell's tomato soup as a gift for its retiring board chairman, Oliver G. Willits; Warhol was paid $2,000 for the work. Campbell also invited the artist to visit its headquarters in Camden, N.J., although Thorn said there's no indication a visit ever took place.

There was no contact after that until 1985, when the company commissioned Warhol to paint packages of its new dry soup mixes for advertisements. Warhol died about two years later.

In 1993, the company bought a Warhol painting of one of its tomato soup cans to hang in its boardroom of its headquarters. The company also has a licensing agreement with the Warhol estate to sell clothing, magnets and other gear, mostly overseas, bearing the artist's renditions.

Campbell has sold Warhol-inspired cans on two other occasions, although on much smaller scales. In 2004, the company sold 75,000 four-packs of Warhol-inspired cans at Giant Eagle, a Pittsburgh-based supermarket operator. During the holiday season in 2006, the company sold 12,000 units at Barney's in New York.

The latest promotion comes as Campbell looks to turn around its struggling soup business after years of declining sales; the company plans to introduce dozens of new products this year.

The cans to be sold at Target will come in four color schemes, with famed Warhol quote such as "In the future everybody will be world famous for 15 minutes."

The red-and-white Campbell label made its debut in 1898. Significant changes to the front of the can have been made only a handful of times since then.

Bonanza of black holes, hot DOGs: NASA's WISE survey uncovers millions of black holes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission has led to a bonanza of newfound supermassive black holes and extreme galaxies called hot DOGs, or dust-obscured galaxies.

Images from the telescope have revealed millions of dusty black hole candidates across the universe and about 1,000 even dustier objects thought to be among the brightest galaxies ever found. These powerful galaxies, which burn brightly with infrared light, are nicknamed hot DOGs.

"WISE has exposed a menagerie of hidden objects," said Hashima Hasan, WISE program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "We've found an asteroid dancing ahead of Earth in its orbit, the coldest star-like orbs known and now, supermassive black holes and galaxies hiding behind cloaks of dust."

WISE scanned the whole sky twice in infrared light, completing its survey in early 2011. Like night-vision goggles probing the dark, the telescope captured millions of images of the sky. All the data from the mission have been released publicly, allowing astronomers to dig in and make new discoveries.

The latest findings are helping astronomers better understand how galaxies and the behemoth black holes at their centers grow and evolve together. For example, the giant black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, called Sagittarius A*, has 4 million times the mass of our sun and has gone through periodic feeding frenzies where material falls towards the black hole, heats up and irradiates its surroundings. Bigger central black holes, up to a billion times the mass of our sun, may even shut down star formation in galaxies.

In one study, astronomers used WISE to identify about 2.5 million actively feeding supermassive black holes across the full sky, stretching back to distances more than 10 billion light-years away. About two-thirds of these objects never had been detected before because dust blocks their visible light. WISE easily sees these monsters because their powerful, accreting black holes warm the dust, causing it to glow in infrared light.

"We've got the black holes cornered," said Daniel Stern of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., lead author of the WISE black hole study and project scientist for another NASA black-hole mission, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). "WISE is finding them across the full sky, while NuSTAR is giving us an entirely new look at their high-energy X-ray light and learning what makes them tick."

In two other WISE papers, researchers report finding what are among the brightest galaxies known, one of the main goals of the mission. So far, they have identified about 1,000 candidates.

These extreme objects can pour out more than 100 trillion times as much light as our sun. They are so dusty, however, that they appear only in the longest wavelengths of infrared light captured by WISE. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope followed up on the discoveries in more detail and helped show that, in addition to hosting supermassive black holes feverishly snacking on gas and dust, these DOGs are busy churning out new stars.

"These dusty, cataclysmically forming galaxies are so rare WISE had to scan the entire sky to find them," said Peter Eisenhardt, lead author of the paper on the first of these bright, dusty galaxies, and project scientist for WISE at JPL. "We are also seeing evidence that these record setters may have formed their black holes before the bulk of their stars. The 'eggs' may have come before the 'chickens.'"

More than 100 of these objects, located about 10 billion light-years away, have been confirmed using the W.M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, as well as the Gemini Observatory in Chile, Palomar's 200-inch Hale telescope near San Diego, and the Multiple Mirror Telescope Observatory near Tucson, Ariz.

The WISE observations, combined with data at even longer infrared wavelengths from Caltech's Submillimeter Observatory atop Mauna Kea, revealed that these extreme galaxies are more than twice as hot as other infrared-bright galaxies. One theory is their dust is being heated by an extremely powerful burst of activity from the supermassive black hole.

"We may be seeing a new, rare phase in the evolution of galaxies," said Jingwen Wu of JPL, lead author of the study on the submillimeter observations. All three papers are being published in the Astrophysical Journal.

The three technical journal articles, including PDFs, can be found at http://arxiv.org/abs/1205.0811, http://arxiv.org/abs/1208.5517 and http://arxiv.org/abs/1208.5518 .

JPL manages and operates WISE for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The principal investigator, Edward Wright, is at UCLA. The mission was competitively selected under NASA's Explorers Program managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The science instrument was built by the Space Dynamics Laboratory, Logan, Utah, and the spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. Science operations and data processing and archiving take place at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Afghan truck bomb kills four, wounds police chief

A "massive" suicide truck bombing in Afghanistan's southern city of Kandahar killed four civilians and wounded the provincial police chief overnight, authorities said Tuesday.

The bombing targeted General Abdul Raziq, the Kandahar provincial police chief, who has a strong anti-Taliban background. Raziq survived the bombing with "minor" injuries to his face, arms and a leg.

"His injuries are not serious and he will soon be discharged from the hospital," a statement from the provincial governor's office said.

"He suffers from burns on his face, arms and leg, it's not serious," Jawed Faisal, a spokesman for the provincial administration, told AFP.

Faisal said four civilians were killed and about 20 others, mostly civilians and members of the same family, were wounded in the blast.

The spokesman described the explosion as "massive, very, very huge". He said the truck bomb was detonated by a suicide attacker as the vehicle of the police chief passed through a neighbourhood in Kandahar city.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing but Taliban insurgents regularly use suicide attacks against the Afghan government and its Western military backers.

Kandahar is the birthplace of the Taliban, who sprang up as a radical Islamic militia force in the 1990s and ruled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001 before they were ousted in a US invasion.

New Orleans' post-Katrina gentrification is touchy

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? With Isaac bearing down on New Orleans, the city finds itself at a delicate moment in its rebuilding since Hurricane Katrina struck seven years ago.

Private and government investment is fueling the push to overhaul some of the city's troubled but culturally rich neighborhoods near the French Quarter, where poor families are being replaced as wealthier ones move in. While the city's in a boom and even gentrifying, some question whether it will wither the roots that grew the city's distinctive identity.

"New Orleans is becoming a boutique city like San Francisco," said Gary Clark, a politics professor at Dillard University. "You may see black middle class moving in, but with gentrification there's overwhelmingly white individuals of means who become the new urban pioneers."

The number of whites, although smaller than before Katrina, has grown as an overall percentage from 28 percent to 33 percent of the city's population. The city has its first white mayor since the 1970s, while the City Council now has a majority of white members.

On the flip side, blacks say there's danger that their community will be diminished in a city that owes deep cultural and economic debts to its Afro-Caribbean roots. Since the storm the African-American community has shrunk by about 118,500 people, dropping from about 68 percent of the population to about 60 percent.

"(Blacks) don't see themselves as being a part of the recovery economy and getting real opportunity," said Nolan V. Rollins, the Urban League of Greater New Orleans president.

It's not clear what effect Isaac could have on the city. On Tuesday morning, Isaac was still a tropical storm packing top sustained winds of 70 mph in the open Gulf. Forecasters said the storm was on the verge of becoming a hurricane Tuesday.

Isaac was expected to come ashore near New Orleans by early Wednesday, the seventh anniversary of Katrina's devastating strike on the city.

This winter the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to demolish the last of the New Deal-era public housing still standing in New Orleans ? the 850-unit Iberville complex. It was erected over the slums of what was for a time the nation's only legal red-light district, Storyville.

The demolition is part of a $31 million HUD "choice neighborhoods" project, a concept pushed by the Obama administration across the nation. HUD hopes that by starting the process of gentrification, private investment will follow and the communities will become desirable places for all races and classes to live in.

Linda Couch, a public housing expert at the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, said the new approach "has the elements of success."

Meanwhile, another $4 billion in private and government investment has been pouring into the historic neighborhoods of Iberville and Treme, the hearth of the city's African-American culture.

The 1.4 square miles where much of the redevelopment is occurring has long been known for gumbo, jazz, voodoo and civil rights pioneers. Immigrants from around the world lived side by side with blacks in Treme and Iberville, where Louis Armstrong once walked the streets and delivered coal as a boy.

But the entire area fell on hard times after the 1960s, as whites moved to the suburbs and bad urban planning took its toll. By the time Katrina hit, it was struggling and looked like an urban desert of blight, drugs and abandonment in many areas.

The plan for redeveloping the area could include the removal of a noisy concrete interstate expressway that runs through Treme with the hope of restoring what was one of the city's main streets for black commerce. Work is already underway to turn an unused rail corridor into a miles-long walking and bike path called the Lafitte Greenway, turning old schools into new charters and opening "fresh-food" supermarkets.

Taking down the Iberville housing complex is crucial, planners say, to connect Treme with the downtown's theater and business district on Canal Street.

"I think we can retain the soul of New Orleans and in fact enhance it by going through this process," said David Gilmore, a HUD housing expert leading the planning effort.

Many residents see a chance to save neighborhoods that have fallen prey to drugs, poverty and blight.

"We're happy if someone moves down the street into a blighted property," said Jennifer Jones, the self-styled "queen of the second-line" and member of a Treme family of musicians. "No one's angry about whites moving in. When we grew up, there was a lot of mixing going on," Jones said.

But others are apprehensive.

"Maybe they've got their reason," said Lionel Glenn, a 69-year-old retired laborer who ended up at Iberville after another project he was in was torn down after Katrina. "I'd like to stay, but I've got to move."

A recent article in a black community newspaper, The New Orleans Tribune, blared: "They're here" in referring to whites looking to buy up inner-city property. The headline read: "Gentrification: The New Segregation."

Unlike the other redevelopments after Katrina, HUD promises to find housing for all the 440 families at Iberville within about 1 mile of the project.

After Katrina, most of the city's projects were torn down quickly and families were dispersed across the nation. Advocates charged that policy forced poor families out of New Orleans. Public housing units were cut in half at those complexes.

"What has happened is exactly what many people predicted would happen," said Lance Hill, who runs the Southern Institute for Education and Research, a race relations center at Tulane University. "Blacks have ended up in apartments ringing the city."

Mayor Mitch Landrieu says there is no reason to fear the redevelopment.

"We're building it back better than it ever was before and the way it always should have been."

In Treme, there are about 200 more white households than before Katrina, Census data shows. Newcomers and old-timers have clashed, even at times over the noise from the impromptu second-lines, the cherished musical parades, which routinely break out. Also, longtime residents worry about the closing of neighborhood bars.

"They are looking for a French Quarter look-a-alike but with a bedroom community feel," said Al Jackson, a Treme resident and historian.

One newcomer is David Williams, a 49-year-old school administrator. He bought an historic home that for now he rents out. The last batch he rented to was a group of young people with Americorps.

Once their son leaves home, he and his wife have talked about moving into the city and living in the house they've bought.

"In 10 years (this neighborhood) is going to look like Treme does a block away from the French Quarter," he said.

Your Health Journal - Len Saunders

From The Sydney Morning Herald?..

AUSTRALIAN children should be weighed and measured regularly at school to tackle childhood obesity, experts say.

Researchers from Deakin University?s World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention said efforts to address the public health epidemic in Australia were being hamstrung by inadequate and outdated data.

They said the federal government needed to introduce a population-wide program to monitor childhood obesity, which was ?a fundamental component of prevention?.

Writing in the journal Pediatric Obesity, the researchers said the absence of such a program meant Australia was falling behind other countries including Britain in measuring childhood obesity and evaluating strategies aiming at reducing it.

?Obesity is one of the major public health concerns facing Australia yet currently there are no routinely collected data to effectively track the problem,? they said.

?Monitoring obesity prevalence in children provides important population health data that can be used to track trends over time, identify areas at greatest risk, determine the effectiveness of interventions and policies, raise awareness and stimulate action.?

The researchers, led by Dr Katie Lacy, said opt-out consent ? where parents were informed of the program and consent assumed unless they sought to withdraw it ? was the best model to ensure high participation rates and obtain representative data. They said fears that taking height and weight measurements in schools could negatively affect children?s body image appeared to be unfounded, based on a statewide program in Arkansas in the US.

?In the Arkansas program, it has been shown that there were no significant increases in teasing, weight concerns, embarrassment or unhealthy dieting among adolescents after three years of measurements,? the researchers said. They said it appeared that problems could be avoided by taking measurements privately and confidential results.

Web Development Trends For 2010 | Website design

Web Development is the general procedure involved in developing or creating websites for the internet. Web development is web site design united with server-side programming. The typical aim of web development is to produce a web application that is database driven. Web development can be for developing the simplest static single page of plain text to the most complex web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, or social network sites which rely heavily on the database.
Imagine one starting a new business or a service; they might want to go for a web site of their venture so that the people get to know about them and to benefit the audience online. Web Development is the in thing these days and almost every product or event has its own web application for promotional or sales motives.
The web development teams for large businesses consist of hundreds of people (web developers). Smaller organizations may only require a single permanent or contracting webmaster or a web designer, or secondary assignment to related job positions such as a graphic designer and/or Information systems technician. Web development can be a collaborative effort between departments rather than the domain of a designated department.
Numerous technologies are used in web development like ASP, PHP JAVA, FLASH, MY SQL, and ORACLE, etc.
There are specific trends on which web development is based, and these trends change with changing user and system needs. Some of the trends in web development and technology for 2010 include:-
1. Real time web and collaboration- Twitter is an example of sharing all happening in real time. The tasks of twitter were so huge and important that even major search engines like Google and Bing have introduced real-time Twitter content in their search results. In the long rung ? real time web and collaboration scenarios it has opened can prove to be a major change in the way how we work, live and play. Good example where all this can be used is ? real-time distributed journalism.
2. Social Networks APIs and tie-ups- In 2010 social networks will continue to dominate and be central pieces of web interactions, But in some different way. Nowadays, all major social networks are exposing their API?s allowing you to create really cool an innovative mashups. Taking the status from Twitter and drawing it in the real time over the Google Earthmap is just one of the very simple examples.
3. RIA platforms (Silverlight, Flex) and rich web frameworks- For long time web was nothing but the HTML, and then some JavaScript. Then richer and richer experiences have started to show around. In the later time, everyone seems to be talking about software as a service, rich web, and rich interactivity models ? all in all ? web is becoming central platform. Silverlight, Microsoft?s answer and technology for building rich online (and some support for offline) web and interactive experiences as well as Adobe?s Flex are major players in this role.
4. Augmented reality and mobile web- With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally usable. Superimposing digitally created objects on top of the real ones is certainly a big thing.
5. Content and data curation (not aggregation)- Today, the biggest challenge in the web appears to be finding and consuming the right content. But the main challenge is to get to that relevant information as fast as possible and to consume it as effective as possible. Personalization and custom tailored data and information delivery will start to play one of the major roles during the 2010.
These are the trends which we are set to see in near future in the area of web development. Applying of these technologies will surely help in creating web application that can handle a lot of services with an ease.

BroadBand Nation: Is The Smart Phone Becoming A Business ...

Here's some thoughts on smartphones (or mobile devices in general)for today's business world ...

Information workers today are increasingly tech-savvy and self-empowered. The typical employee owns an assortment of laptops, smartphones, tablets and PCs that are often more advanced than what most information technology departments can offer. Not surprisingly, many employees prefer to access corporate resources using their own technology because it is familiar, powerful and already an integral part of their everyday lives.

Mundane communications, like instant messaging, downloading and responding to business email and working on documents is actually considered to be confidential information.

Mobile devices are a convenient way to do business when employees are away from their desks, but employers need to understand the risks of using unsecured devices for conducting sensitive business communications.

In my opinion, smartphones will take-over the desktop/laptop user base in the next five years and smartphones will be the device of choice. The most important consideration every manufacturer should consider going forward is device security.

Many years ago I carried a Daytimer for notes and appointments, an address book for contact information and used a wired phone to make calls. I switched to a Palm Pilot for the notes, appointments, time keeping and address book and a cell phone plus a laptop. All a smart phone dose (or was ever intended to do) is to combine all those functions into one device, not two or three.

One thing that should not be overlooked is that smartphones are a convergent technology; they are not really phones, so much as mobile computers. The reason we call them "smartphones" is because we are in a transition phase and most people haven't accepted the ideas that (1) just because you can make calls on something doesn't make it a phone, and (2) you don't have to own a "phone".

I think this can best be seen with the Samsung Galaxy Note which was initially marketed as being both a tablet and a smartphone, while really being neither. In essence, it's a PalmPilot with a touchscreen that can make calls. But they had to market it as a phone because phones are seen as a necessity; people will buy a phone that acts like a tablet, but not a tablet that acts like a phone.

Also, I think another thing that is often overlooked is the reason that smartphones are sold on features such as processing or screen size. This is because of their true nature as mobile computers - that's really the only thing that sets different models apart. The reason they don't sell on things like call quality or rollover minutes is because those things are determined by the phone service provider and not the model of the phone itself. Typically, people choose the provider before they choose the phone, so once they've locked into that decision, the only thing smartphone manufacturers can compete on are their computing features. This is why you hear about how many apps you can buy on the iPhone, or the Galaxy SII having a huge screen, but nothing about their ability to make calls - they can't sell based on that point, because there's no difference.

In summary there's 2 important points to consider:

(1) "Smartphones" are technically mobile computers that can make calls; we only call them "phones" because society hasn't adjusted to the idea of not owning a "phone" yet.

(2) Smartphones are marketed based on processing power, screen size, etc. because things like call quality are tied to the phone service provider, which is picked (almost) independently from the phone itself.

So to answer the question, yes smartphones are becoming a necessity for business today. Their feature advantages a definitely a benefit to every business increasing both efficiency and effectiveness. They represent a trend of convergence of technology in society.

If you're looking for a smart phone I suggest using the search and compare feature here ....

Hubble captures a collection of ancient stars

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has produced a beautiful image of the globular cluster Messier 56 (also known as M 56 or NGC 6779), which is located about 33,000 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Lyra (The Lyre). The cluster is composed of a large number of stars, tightly bound to each other by gravity.

However, this was not known when Charles Messier first observed it in January 1779. He described Messier 56 as "a nebula without stars," like most globular clusters that he discovered -- his telescope was not powerful enough to individually resolve any of the stars visible here, making it look like a fuzzy ball through his telescope's eyepiece. We clearly see from Hubble's image how the development of technology over the years has helped our understanding of astronomical objects.

Astronomers typically infer important properties of globular clusters by looking at the light of their constituent stars. But they have to be very careful when they observe objects like Messier 56, which is located close to the Galactic plane. This region is crowded by "field-stars," in other words, stars in the Milky Way that happen to lie in the same direction but do not belong to the cluster. These objects can contaminate the light, and hence undermine the conclusions reached by astronomers.

A tool often used by scientists for studying stellar clusters is the color-magnitude (or Hertzsprung-Russell) diagram. This chart compares the brightness and color of stars -- which in turn, tells scientists the surface temperature of a star.

By comparing high quality observations taken with the Hubble Space Telescope with results from the standard theory of stellar evolution, astronomers can characterize the properties of a cluster. In the case of Messier 56, this includes its age, which at 13 billion years is approximately three times the age of the Sun. Furthermore, they have also been able to study the chemical composition of Messier 56. The cluster has relatively few elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, typically a sign of stars that were born early in the Universe's history, before many of the elements in existence today were formed in significant quantities.

Astronomers have found that the majority of clusters with this type of chemical makeup lie along a plane in the Milky Way's halo. This suggests that such clusters were captured from a satellite galaxy, rather than being the oldest members of the Milky Way's globular cluster system as had been previously thought.

This image consists of visible and near-infrared exposures from Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.3 by 3.3 arcminutes.

A version of this image was entered into the Hubble's Hidden Treasures Image Processing Competition by contestant Gilles Chapdelaine. Hidden Treasures is an initiative to invite astronomy enthusiasts to search the Hubble archive for stunning images that have never been seen by the general public.

Trumka slams ICE union-led lawsuit against Obama administration

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka slammed the lawsuit filed by 10 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents against the Obama administration over its deferred deportation plan, Thursday.

Led by Chris Crane, president of the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council ? the union representing over 7,000 ICE agents and employees ? the agents filed their challenge to the Obama policy in federal court, claiming that it forces them to break their oath to uphold the law. At least nine of the 10 are members of the ICE union.

According to Trumka, however, it is the agents who are out of line.

?These agents are working with some of the most anti-immigrant forces in the country, forces that have long sowed division and destruction,? he said in a statement.

Crane explained on Thursday that the suit is based on the legal?ramifications of the administration?s plan. And while it is indeed focused?on the implications of the policy, there are political connections ??Kansas Secretary of State and Mitt Romney adviser Kris Kobach is the?lead attorney, and low-immigration group NumbersUSA is backing the?effort.

?We have officers who are under threat of losing their jobs and retirement if they refuse to use what we think are unlawful orders,? Crane said, according to the LA Times.

Trumka, who endorsed President Barack Obama in March, blamed conservatives for immigration problems.

?For too long, conservative politicians have failed our people and our country by blocking the creation of a common-sense immigration process. Their inaction prompted President Obama to announce a policy to grant deferred action for DREAMers who were brought here as children ? a policy that helps all working men and women.?

The estimated number of undocumented immigrants aged 30 and under who are expected to benefit from the administration?s deferment policy ? which would immunize them from deportation and allow them to apply for temporary, renewable work visas ??range?from 800,000 to over 1.7 million. The unemployment rate is currently 8.3 percent.

?The labor movement is united in calling on Congress to take action and create a common-sense immigration process ? one that reflects our values, keeps families together, supports a secure border and creates a roadmap to citizenship,? Trumka concluded.

To the agents involved, however, they say their concern is about the rule of law.

?This lawsuit seeks to prevent law enforcement officer Plaintiffs from being forced to either violate federal law if they comply with the unlawful directive or risk adverse employment action if they disobey the unlawful orders of the DHS secretary,? the suit reads. ?This lawsuit also seeks to preserve the balance of legislative and executive powers established by the United States Constitution.?

Who is to blame for UFC 151 cancellation?

Plenty of anger bubbled up after UFC 151 was canceled. From UFC president Dana White to fans who posted on Cagewriter's Facebook page, people are angry there won't be fights in Las Vegas next weekend. Anger quickly turns into a search for blame. Who do you blame for UFC 151's demise?

Jon Jones: When an injury happens, fighters often have to make sacrifices to still be able to fight. Ask Rich Franklin about the many times he has stepped up when the UFC needed him to, and how he's been rewarded. Jones didn't do that, and missed out on an opportunity to win a ton of fans. He made a business decision, but now will have to face the business consequences for how fans react when fights at UFC 152.

The UFC: In planning a top-heavy card with UFC 151, they were playing with fire. Main event fighters are injured all the time. Even Jones has had to postpone fights for an injury. Putting a holiday weekend pay-per-view on the backs of two fighters was begging for a problem, as was hoping for a late replacement after a very busy summer of MMA.

Greg Jackson: UFC president Dana White threw some blame towards Jackson, Jones' coach.

"Jones's trainer, Greg Jackson, told Jon that taking the fight with Chael would be the biggest mistake of his life. That's what he told Jon Jones. Let me tell you, this guy (Greg Jackson) is a sport killer," White said on a media conference call.

"When you are a champion, much less one of the guys who is supposed to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, you are supposed to step up. Jon Jones is a guy a lot of fans don't like, and I don't think this is going to make him any more popular. Lorenzo Fertitta (UFC chairman and CEO) and I are disgusted with Jon Jones and Greg Jackson."
